The Democratic Club of Pembroke Pines, the Miramar Democratic Club, and the Broward Chapter of the Democratic Hispanic Caucus jointly sponsored Leaders Who Shine, an event honoring leaders who were active in politics in Broward County and statewide. Among the honorees that Oct. 23 evening were former Tallahassee mayor and gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum, president of the Broward County Presidents’ Council of Democratic Clubs and Caucuses Karen Fortman, and Miramar Commissioner Yvette Colbourne. Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis and Pembroke Pines Commissioner Angelo Castillo both spoke about the importance of voting and working hard for 2020. Both Ortis and Castillo are candidates for the office of Pembroke Pines mayor. Gillum also spoke about turnout and how important voting was in Florida and across the country. Gillum said he lost by such a small margin and that meant that the elections in 2020 and 2022 were very important and could be won.
