Established in 1995, First Step Champions Inc. was originated to provide economically disadvantaged children with opportunities to learn the art of kickboxing and boxing. The organization is grounded in the belief of improving the lives of children in need by giving them the tools to gain the confidence needed to bypass adversity and become leaders and role models of their communities. In addition, the organization believes in the core principles of love toward education, compassion and cultivating the resilience to overcome hardships.
First Step Champions seeks to be the supplement children need between school and home. Its different programs focus on improving academic achievement, self-esteem, social skills and overall well-being of their students. The programs are targeted to children ages 5-12 who reside in Brownsville and nearby areas.
The core services are provided through sport and fitness activities, like skills coaching, as well as nutrition and wellness education. Differential learning for children in need of extra assistance is also available. STEM programs and field trips are offered during the summer program.
Organizations such as The Children’s Trust and Miami-Dade Parks and Recreations have provided funding and support. Recently, First Step Champions was awarded the Impact Inclusion Award by the Advocacy Network on Disabilities.
Seven people make up the organization’s staff. It is located on 6940 NW 27 Ave., in Miami.
