Since 2001, Garden of Light Academy has been serving the educational needs of children in the North Miami area. Since before opening its doors, owner, Merline Pierre, dreamed of making a difference in the lives of children, starting from the root.
Garden of Light Academy's mission is to foster a well-structured Christian environment to educate young minds to get them ready for society. The academy founder believes that all children can and are ready to learn and that every individual mind will grow at its expected capacity.
With four people on staff, the academy's student population is made up of 80 percent Black students, with 13 percent Hispanic, 2 percent Asian, and 5 percent other races.
Located at 1171 NE 149th St., in North Miami, the academy offers linguistic skills improvement, arts and crafts development, mindfulness lessons, music, sports, and STEM classes, as well as reading and academic tutoring and parent outreach.
The academy receives support from The Children’s Trust, the Early Learning Coalition, Family Central and the Child Care Food Program.
The academy is currently working on renovating its playground. Community members can get involved by volunteering their time, or donating money or materials for the project.
