Sufferers of hair loss will have support this weekend at an event that aims to uplift with a little luxury.
Alopecian Beauty Co. is a nonprofit that empowers, serve, and connect alopecians to each other and to professional support. Moneé Sanders founded her nonprofit in 2017 at just 19 years old. She started hand-making wigs at 13 years old in the south side of Chicago.Through her wig-making business, she met clients with alopecia, people who were losing their hair, and found out that alopecia was prevalent within her own family. She saw a need to uplift as well as help those experiencing hair loss.
Her mother and grandmother both suffer from the hair loss disease. One was diagnosed with alopecia areata (spot baldness) the other diagnosed with alopecia universalis (complete hair loss on head and body).
“Create Smiles Daily” is Sanders’ slogan because so many women cried and shared stories regarding the hardships of the disease, she said. She attended Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School.
Her nonprofit helps to spread awareness about alopecia since no one was talking about it and their isn’t a known cure, she said. Proceeds from the event will be used to seek a plant-based cure.
She is also communicating with dermatologists in hopes that wigs become medically recognized so insurance companies would cover the cost for hair loss suffers.
Alopecian Beauty Co. is hosting its third mixer and the theme is Under The Sea. The Alopecian Beauty Mixer will take place Saturday, Nov. 9 from 7:30–10:30 p.m. at Innergy Meditation, 1560 Lenox Ave., Suite 102, Miami Beach.
The event will feature motivational speakers, alopecia and beauty influencers, dermatologists, cosmetologists, barbers, oncologists, and other medical professionals. There will be food and entertainment and an $800 valued wig give-away.
